Avocado oil is an excellent plant-based oil. However, following a global shortage in 2018, we decided to take a closer look at this sector.
We discovered that intensive avocado farming raises several environmental concerns today. Plantations require large amounts of water and are often grown as monocultures, which can put pressure on water resources and soil health. In some regions of the world, particularly in Mexico and Peru, the rapid expansion of avocado orchards has also contributed to deforestation and conflicts over water access.
Mexico, the world’s leading producer, accounts for a large share of this production. In certain areas, the economic value of avocados has attracted criminal organizations that extort farmers or attempt to control agricultural land. In addition, forests have sometimes been cleared to make way for avocado plantations.
In light of these environmental and social issues, we have decided to step away from this supply chain and no longer use avocado oil in our formulations.
We have replaced it with hemp oil, which offers many similar properties and has the added benefit of being locally produced.
